1981-CARTOON ABOUT VIET VETS AND PARADE....

There is a small controversy today about "Canyon of Heroes" parades in New York City.  Some believe that it is time to honor the troops who fought in Iraq with a ticker tape parade.  New York's Mayor Blumberg, bowing to the wishes of the Pentagon, has rejected the idea of such an event "at this time."
Ironically, the 2012 Super Bowl Champs were so honored just a few days after their victory.

It reminded me of the joyous attention and ticker tape parade showered on the newly released hostages from Iran in 1981.
I did this cartoon at that time as a reminder that the troops who had fought in the Vietnam War had not had such a welcome when they returned from the battlefield.
For this cartoon, the Freedoms Foundation gave me their principal award, The George Washington Medal.
The Vietnam Vets finally got a parade in 1985, ten years after the war ended.
